Gear Review: Oakley FUEL CELL™
Summer’s almost here and you need some protection from the harsh rays of the sun. If that protection happens to be bombproof and stylish… even better.
In recent years, the Oakley product line has branched out in many directions such as board-shorts, and other gear, however, what they still rock at is making really good sunglasses. The Fuel Cell glasses are no exception! After wearing a pair of Oakleys for a while, you see that’s obvious why Oakley’s technology is chosen by those whose lives depend on their gear, including members of the Navy SEALs.
Oakley always toys with a mix of art, technology, and functionality. The idea behind the creation of the fuel cell was clean, authentic style for those who are charging down the path of life (not for the weak at heart or the office dweller).
The lenses aren’t too dark, so they would not be the best choice for deep sea fishing, but they are great on a sunshiny day or when it’s slightly cloudy. Compared with its brother the Gascan, these are more “tall” so they can cover more of your face and eyes. These glasses are made for the large noggin among us, not to say that a smaller face wouldn’t accommodate them. Just saying, they are one fat pair of glasses.
The Gascan and the Fuel Cells are both the go to glasses for Joey on our review team! As well as being a favorite among us big guys as our rock climbing glasses! The fit and finish on the glasses make them great for any high endurance sport (add on a lanyard of course). The impact protection meets all ANSI Z87.1 basic standards while UV filtering is 100% for every single ray of UVA, UVB and UVC. Add in the lens curvature and frame architecture for side protection and you’re set!
Now for the technical part:
The LENS features:
- Dual lens POLARIC ELLIPSOID™ geometry
- Optical precision and impact resistance meet or exceed Z87.1 optical and basic impact standards
- UV protection of PLUTONITE® lens material that filters out 100% of UVA/ UVB/ UVC & harmful blue light up to 400nm
The FRAME features:
- Durability and all-day comfort of lightweight, stress resistant O MATTER® frame material (great for sports)
- Comfort and performance of Three-Point Fit that holds lenses in precise optical alignment
- Metal icon accents (our pair has a bad ass American flag on the Oakley logo. No comment on where we got them.)
Recently, Oakley put their protective powers to the test when they donated 35 pairs of Radar and Range glasses to the Chilean government to protect the eyes of the miners during the rescue effort, and after, while their eyes adjusted to surface light levels. In addition to this being an amazing marketing move that was covered by 2,000 journalists from 40 countries, it was a downright righteous thing to do for the 33 miners who’d already been through hell. This mix of outstanding engineering, edgy styling, and generous philanthropy makes choosing Oakley for sunglasses an easy one.

We got the SI hookup of course! Check out all of their Custom pairs as well!

Great review! I bought a pair for mowing yards after reading this. Great coverage for sure!
